Filming & Photography Policy

Blarney Castle & Gardens Filming & Photography Policy

Blarney Castle is a historically significant and iconic site located in County Cork, Ireland. As part of our efforts to maintain and protect the integrity of the Castle and its gardens, we have established guidelines for filming and photography. These guidelines are designed to ensure that both professional and personal use of the site respects the space, the visitors, and the heritage of this world-renowned monument.

1. General Policy:

  • All filming and photography at Blarney Castle & Gardens, for commercial purposes, must be pre-approved by Blarney Castle Management.
  • Visitors are permitted to take personal photographs and videos for private use without a permit, except in restricted areas or where indicated by signage (inside Blarney House)
  • Commercial filming, photography, and media production activities must be arranged in advance and are subject to availability, restrictions, and fees.
  • Blarney Castle reserves the right to restrict access to certain areas for filming and photography, based on operational needs, visitor safety, or preservation concerns.

2. Types of Filming/Photography:

Personal Photography/Video:
  • Personal use (non-commercial, casual photographs or videos) is allowed for visitors but should not interfere with the enjoyment of others or disrupt the operation of the Castle.
  • Drones are prohibited unless a special permission is granted.
Commercial Photography/Filming:
  • Commercial filming or professional photography (including but not limited to advertisements, films, and photoshoots for products, brands, publications, etc.) requires prior approval.
  • All requests for commercial work must be submitted at least two weeks in advance, outlining the type of project, equipment needed, personnel involved, and the intended schedule.
Media Production (TV, Film, Documentaries):
  • All media production activities require a detailed proposal, including a risk assessment, and must be scheduled with the Castle Management Team.
  • Locations and areas to be filmed will be determined based on the nature of the production and timing, and filming may be restricted to certain areas to avoid disruption to visitors.

3. Application Process:

  • Submit a formal request to Blarney Castle’s management, including:
    • Project description and objectives.
    • Details of the crew, equipment, and vehicles.
    • Proposed dates and times.
    • Insurance coverage details (minimum coverage requirements apply).
    • Any additional requirements (i.e., access to restricted areas, special accommodations).
  • All approved filming and photography are subject to a location fee, and additional fees may apply depending on the scope of the project.
  • A location agreement will be required to be signed before any commercial activity begins.

4. Restrictions and Considerations:

  • Environmental Protection: All filming and photography activities must be conducted with respect for the environment. No alterations or damage to the Castle or grounds are allowed.
  • Noise & Disruption: No excessive noise or equipment that could disrupt other visitors’ experience is permitted. Filming must not obstruct pathways or general access to public areas.
  • Visitor Experience: Filming should be arranged during off-peak hours, if possible, to minimize the impact on visitors. Commercial shoots may need to be scheduled early in the morning or outside peak visitation times.
  • Drone Use: Drones are prohibited unless authorized by management in advance for a specific project, and subject to conditions set by local aviation authorities.

5. Liability & Insurance:

  • The applicant must have valid insurance covering public liability, personal injury, and property damage. The required minimum coverage will be outlined in the location agreement.
  • Blarney Castle accepts no responsibility for any loss, damage, or injury incurred during filming or photography activities on site.

6. Pricing & Fees:

  • Location fees will be determined based on the scope of the project, crew size, and filming duration.
  • Additional costs may include parking for production vehicles, special accommodations, security personnel, and other logistical support.

7. Additional Requirements:

  • Crew members are required to adhere to all rules and guidelines while on site, including health and safety regulations.
  • Any equipment or setup must be pre-approved and must not interfere with the Castle’s infrastructure or visitor access.
  • Filming and photography may be paused or cancelled at any time by Castle staff if they believe the activity compromises the safety or experience of visitors.
